INTRODUCTION

Every adult has several life lessons they’ve learned as children that positively influenced their life greatly to this extent that they find it very hard to let go of it.  Many life choices we may have made that have marked a turning point in our lives can be traced from lessons we learned from Parents, guardians, mentors or people we look up to one way or the other as role model.

Life lessons go a long way to shape a child’s future. Several Life lessons should be instilled into a child as they pass through every stage from preschool even till college. Many parents and guardians who take this for granted may end up nurturing a child that may likely become undisciplined and showing a lackadaisical attitude towards things of utmost value in life.  

Life, they say, is full of ups and downs; it is also not a bed of roses. There are so many philosophies to express life, and how to successfully live, from achieving success, happiness to fulfilling our dreams. However, children need to be prepared to face life as they grow and who else can help them through every stage, if not their parents or guardians. Parents can use their own experience to guide children as they grow. Parents should not try to shield children from learning the reality of what life entails.

Life lessons can be defined as lessons that impart knowledge and principles that are useful for growth and also enhances the life of every individual.

The importance of life lessons for children cannot be underestimated. It helps them to be independent anywhere they find themselves as well as taking responsibility for their actions.

Let’s not forget that these lessons can also help a child have a healthy dose of good self-esteem, quality social and moral skills, self-sufficiency and ability to take up tasks.

Sadly in our world today, many children lack these basic life skills and it keeps affecting their effectiveness as young adults. A child can be duly addressed as a responsible adult in the future when they can make the right decisions without the support of their parents.

General life lessons every child should learn

Honesty  

Children have to understand the power and good in always telling the truth to themselves and others as well as the consequences of telling lies. This will enable them to have a sense of integrity as well as being a man of their words.

Respect

Every child must learn to understand that respect is reciprocal, and it is a fundamental trait for every other trait. The importance of respect can not be overemphasized; respect of colleagues, parents, teachers, and partners is vital in life.

Dealing with failures and disappointment

Parents should help their children understand that failure is just an event, and they are not failures even if they fail. Parents should show their children love and help them realize that when they fall, they can rise again. Not every child knows how to deal with disappointment or loss. It is the parent’s duty to help them see that it is part of life, and they should not be too hard on themselves.

Staying Healthy

Healthy lifestyle is one of the bedrock of a successful life as the saying goes, “health is wealth.” Parents should encourage healthy eating habits for their kids. Healthy food is vital for a stress-free and sickness free life.

Managing Time effectively

Time management is a skill that is useful for a balanced life. A child needs to develop this skill and maintain it as they grow up. Time management will help children know their priorities and avoid spending too much time on unnecessary things.

Good Manners

Parents need to instill appropriate manners in their children, starting from an early stage. It is every parent’s pride for their children to be well mannered and composed at all times. Good manners are popularly known to improve a child’s social and intellectual actions. Teach your children the importance of phrases like ‘sorry,’ ‘please,’ and ‘thank you.’ Every good manner you encourage your children to practice will be a part of them even when they become adults.

How to manage money  

Every child must learn the importance of financial literacy because it helps them understand the power of money-making decisions. Teach your child how to save and invest; this will help them understand the consequences of squandering money.

Taking Responsibility

Responsibility is a vital life lesson everyone must learn. When children learn to take responsibility for their actions, they understand every decision they make has consequences. Parents can help their children take responsibility by constantly telling them the consequences of every action they take, as well as teaching them the right path and making positive influences in their lives.

Kindness and Forgiveness  

Every child should learn to be kind and forgiving to other people. Parents should try to discourage bitterness in their children and should help them see the good in being at peace with everyone. Forgiveness is a vital part of every relationship; this is a skill every child needs for interpersonal relationships.

Staying out of troubles

Trouble is inevitable but with wisdom it can be avoided. Every child should learn to proactively foresee trouble before it happen. And by so doing, it can be a good defence to negating troubles before it starts. Any discussion that is leading to argument and misunderstanding should be let go off. Places that troubles is likely to happen should be avoided. Making friends with trouble makers also should be avoided.

Handling rejection

Human being face rejection in so many ways; therefore it’s good thing for parents to help a child learn to handle rejection early in childhood. Let children know that they can be deprived of one good thing or the other ones in a while but that doesn’t mean the end of life.The understanding that one can fail in one life endeavor or the other should be taught to children in other to make them realise their is always a second chance in life endeavors. Let them know that success doesn’t happen overnight.

Life lessons for children according to their age group

Life lessons for children age 2-3years (toddlers)   

This is a stage where a child is treated like a baby, giving them whatever they request. Parents should not try to get carried at this level because kids at this age may throw a lot of tantrums, but they are highly curious and open to learning new things.

They may try to reveal a little independence when it comes to certain skills. When that happens, parents should indulge them. Even when they make mistakes, they should be corrected and encouraged to keep trying.

These skills may not seem extraordinary, but it is important for every child to feel responsible for little tasks. Then gradually, as they grow, they embrace responsibility for greater tasks. 

Life skills for toddlers are basic skills that involve a child learning to put playthings away when they are done playing, trying to dress and undress with assistance from parents and guardians, they should also be able to put dirty clothes away in the hamper.

At this age, a toddler may not be able to do the dishes but should be able to clear his/ her plates after every meal and should also be able to set the table. With assistance, a toddler should be able to brush his teeth properly and wash his face. If a child makes a mess, he should imbibe the skill of wiping it off.  A toddler should be taught all these skills and encouraged every day.

Life Lessons for children age 3-5 years (Preschoolers)

At this stage, a child is already taught basic life skills and is gradually learning more socially and intellectually. However, Parents should take note of the important skills and lessons a child needs to get at this age. At this stage, a child should know what to do in case of emergencies or danger.

Parents should teach their children to be cautious and avoid dangers, for instance, telling a child to be wary of strangers. Several life skills for a child of this age include learning important information like their full names as well as parents/guardians information, addresses, emails, and cell phone numbers, simple house chores like cleaning and clearing, feeding of pets if there is any, identifying the currency and value of money, this is highly important if you want your child to understand the concept of finances.

Other skills are salutation, running small errands within the house, keeping of own properties, orderliness, showing gratitude and knowing the value of time (the right time to do things).

Life Lessons for children of age 6-12 years (School-age kids)  

This age is popularly known as the school-age period. At this stage, children want to try new things, make new friends, meet new people, learn new things from the curriculum. Children should be able to learn basic cooking skills as well as other important skills from the age of 6years.

Parents should encourage their children to be present when preparing food kitchen. At this level, a child should know how to prepare simple meals like a sandwich, scrambled eggs, or making cereal as well as serving food. Your child should know how to use basic kitchen utensils like using a knife to cut or dice, microwave to make the food warm and fresh. This is also the right time to teach kids basic etiquette and table manners.

Let’s not forget general home cleaning skills, like dusting and cleaning dirty surfaces, cleaning the bathroom after use, bathing without any assistance, and making the bed alone. Lessons at school for personal health is not enough. Parents should teach their children the importance of personal hygiene.                             

At the age of 8 or 9 years, a child should be able to properly maintain and take care of their personal items like clothes and toys, count money, and know change when spending. A child should also know how to make a good list for shopping, especially when sent on errands, how to order food, how to take messages for their parents

At 10-13, a child should know the value of time when spending leisure time with friends, i.e., knowing when to return home for certain chores or routines. This is a stage where a child can stay independently like babysitting younger siblings properly without supervision, go to stores to purchase items themselves, operating the washing machine and doing laundry, Iron clothes well can bake using the oven, and can also make calls or operate phones and computers. Children should also learn how to read labels on food, medications, or any kind of product.

Life Lessons for children age 13-18 years (Teenagers/Advanced years)   

At this stage, which is the teen years, a child should have already mastered the skills listed above. The teen years are exciting times for children because they are looking forward to trying new things and like to think they are independent. These skills are also useful for children preparing for college.

The skills every child needs at this age include intense house cleaning chores, how to change a tire spare, unclogging drainage systems, drive a car and refill the tank, volunteer or intern where their various skills are needed, apply for a job and interview themselves, have a personal to-do list or calendar and follow the routines, compare prices and get the best sales, know the art of banking like how to open an account, withdraw using the electronic machine, how to save or make deposits, how to set reasonable goals and plans as well as achieving them.

When they are out on their own, they should also know how to order car services, party responsibly, also learn to understand the basic concept of leases and financial expectations. They should also be able to keep simple appointments as work-related, health-related, or academics related. At this stage, they should confirm and get adequate information from the right source and not make any decision based on just any rumors.

The world can be a better place if these life lessons which incorporate skills, knowledge and other related functions are encouraged in the lives of kids which will in turn become an essential part of living a successful life now and nearby future.
